2. Installation / Getting Started

Xpress 9.7 is a standalone release, not an incremental patch. It is recommended that users upgrading from a previous release should uninstall the existing software prior to installing 9.7.

Xpress Insight is installed from a seperate installation package. Xpress Insight requires a full installation of the main Xpress 9.7 software and should be installed after the main Xpress installation has completed successfully.

The Installation Guide contains step by step installation instructions.

We recommend that users who are new to the Xpress software begin by reading the Getting Started Manual.

3. Documentation

All FICO Xpress Optimization manuals and API references are available in searchable HTML format on the fico.com website.

PDF versions of the core manuals along with JavaDoc documentation for the Java API are distributed with the software.

4. Examples

The examples directory of the Xpress installation contains the Xpress examples.

For Windows platforms, makefiles compatible with nmake are included for all examples requiring compilation.

For Unix platforms, makefiles compatible with gmake are included for all examples requiring compilation. These makefiles require the XPRESSDIR environment variable to be set to the location of the xpressmp installation directory.

5. Information Security

FICO adheres to industry-standard best practices for software information security, to eliminate vulnerabilities that might allow unauthorized control or access to sensitive information.

Users of FICO software share an important responsibility for information security. FICO recommends that its customers take great care whenever handling sensitive, regulated, or personally identifiable information, and in protecting systems which house such information from security breaches. Good practices include:

  • Unless specifically necessary to meet project objectives, avoid using data that contains privileged or personally identifiable information
  • In situations requiring unique record identifiers (e.g., account numbers, social security numbers), use manufactured substitutes in place of personally identifiable values
  • Host this software behind your firewalls, protecting it from attack from outside the company
  • Host this software on machines which run independently of other mission-critical applications
  • Enable access to only those users whose role and project responsibilities require it
  • Deploy and maintain best practices to protect user credentials, such as enforcing strong passwords, communicating credentials via secured channels, and requiring employees to regularly change passwords
  • Educate employees to maintain awareness of security threats and practices
  • Regularly monitor and review systems for signs of breach from within and without
  • Promptly install security-related patches and maintenance releases
